Contemplating Coals

Contemplating Coals

Sunflower silhouettes against a starry sky
the petals perish, yet the stalks reach high.
Spouses snuggle around the fireside warmth,
their bodies aging, yet their love glows still.
You and I silent, in the garden, contemplating coals,
embers now, where once the flames gave light,
will warm our way into the deepening night.
